Just like Bob Harper, my personal trainer husband had a heart attack 24

I have NEVER publicly shared this before…

And you might be wondering, why are you sharing it now? Well, after one of my good sister friends shared on Facebook the video clip of Bob Harper’s exclusive interview on The Today show I was compelled to share. He was talking about the heart attack he had and to say I was in tears is an understatement.  Why? Because I have a similar story…

On April 2, 2016, around 11 pm, I drove my now husband, Anthony, to the emergency room because he was having chest pains. We actually thought it was allergy related because the pollen count was so high that week and we were both very miserable as a result. Because he had a heart attack in 2008, they always treat him immediately whenever he went to the ER.  As soon as he told them he was having chest pains they took him back. They ran all sorts of test and found nothing. But he was still in pain.  Then something happened! Just after midnight, he started feeling and acting differently right before my very eyes. I remember him saying “guys something is wrong, something is wrong”.

I cannot tell you how petrified I was at that moment. My entire body went cold.  But always being the strong one, I had to keep it together. He didn’t need me breaking down, so I had to be strong. And I was…at least I tried to be.

BUT…can I tell you what was really going through my mind? All I kept saying to myself and God is “I can’t lose him”. You see we were planning to secretly get married in less than 3 weeks and leave the country to celebrate our new life together. I have been married before – twice as a matter of fact and both marriages sucked pretty bad (that’s another post). But I knew this time was going to be different. I had never met a man like this before. No one related to me like him. Understood me like him. Took care of me like him. Shucks, no one ever put up with me like him – because let’s face it, I can be a piece of work. But you get my point, I felt like life with him was finally “my happily ever after” and the thought of that ending before it started SCARED ME TO DEATH.

Machines were beeping.  Doctors and nurses were scurrying around and I was panicking.  It turns out he was having a heart attack! Right before my very eyes!  I still cannot believe it. Reliving that moment still, brings tears to my eyes.

When you think about the “type” of people who have heart attacks you generally think of people who are overweight and who don’t exercise. Well, my husband is neither. In fact, he’s a gym rat and works out nearly two hours a day, four times a week. He does not “look” like someone who had a heart attack. But he did. Just like Bob Harper.

As a result of this untimely tragedy (the nerve of him to have a heart attack during tax season – I’M JOKING), we have committed ourselves to LIVING! And we live unapologetically and to the fullest. For us, that means we really don’t “sweat the small stuff”. We focus our time and energy on the things that truly matter in life. We spend time with people who share our values and who enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs. So when you see my #TeamAB post on social media, believe me, it’s not a “front”.  We really do love each other and we can have a good time in our backyard playing with a box of rocks.

I’m not sure who this story is for but I’m sure it will help someone along the way. I would also like to add that he has made a great recovery and he’s still a gym rat.  After tax season, I’m going to really get on him about starting his personal training business. He’s very modest about his abilities but he gets great results.  Stay tuned…

OMG, so sorry you went through that, I feel you because I went through the same thing when my husband has his stroke and I realized we hadn’t had enough time together. We had 15 years, but I wanted more, we’re at 22 years and counting and he’s doing awesome. I pray you and your husband have many more years together.

Thank you for the post. I took two things out of it. Live for now because one never knows (and it sounds as if you and Anthony do just that). And, the second take away, is listen to your body and take action. I know how hard that is, especially when you don’t look the type or act the type to be ill but something very similar happened to me. I had a stomach ache and only reluctantly went to a clinic to have it checked out because it didn’t seem right. The next thing I know I am on my way to the Emergency Room and three days in the hospital. Eventually I had a pacemaker implanted. I was in denial because I was healthy and had no signs of heart issues. So thank you so much for sharing and may your happy marriage to Anthony continue for many, many happy years.

Yes! We never know when our time is up! And we certainly have to listen to our bodies. I hope you are recovering well.

Amazing story. I’m so happy that everything worked out for the good. The body is so complex. Who would’ve thought that a fit person would ever have a heart attack or a stroke. Your story has uplifted me. I’m so happy that I came across this story.

Yes, I was crying as a wrote it. Life is so precious and we should never take it for granted. I know I don’t anymore.

The first one was because of diet and stress. The second one was because one of his meds wasn’t working…(yikes right?).
