Two weeks ago I received the scariest call ever! My daughter called me out of the blue (because we usually text first, the call frighten me). Her voice was very low and filled with fear, and she said, “Mommy, there’s an active shooter on campus (she works at Howard University), and I just called to say I love you.”
My heart literally dropped to my feet, and for what felt like forever I was speechless. What do you say in a moment like this? What do you do?
I gathered myself and told her that I loved her too. I asked her to please be careful, stay hidden, and keep me posted.
In that instant, I finally knew what all those other parents felt when they received similar calls. It wasn’t until I experienced it too, that I knew what they went through.
Fraud is the same way. Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them until it does.
Even though I have been an accountant for over 20 years, I didn’t fully realize the impact of fraud. Not until one of my clients was a victim. Helping this client navigate through this process and put procedures in place to make sure it doesn’t happen ago, truly opened my eyes.
That is the reason I wrote my latest book, Did You Hire a Fraud? I want to do my part to keep small business, in business. If you haven’t purchased your copy, grab it today. It’s a great read and will open your eyes to ways to protect your business.
By the way…my daughter is doing fine. The news reports vary, but most of them say there was not an active shooter on campus. That was a close call!
